Stripe Doubles it’s Value in One Year

So if you’ve been looking around our website you might have come across the word Stripe a few times. In case you’re not sure what it is then this article might well be of interest. It’s already the world’s second most used payment platform and it’s quickly becoming a favourite of developers.

Firstly, it charges a smaller percentage fee than companies like PayPal and Square and it’s extremely flexible allowing payments to be taken in a variety of ways.

Valuation in 2015

Stripe’s 2015 valuation put the company value at $5 billion. This isn’t bad for a company that is still technically a start-up. Hitting the online world in 2010 Stripe has exploded onto the scene and is already licking the heels of PayPal. Cheaper rates and improved flexibility are the biggest attractions to Stripe. Since Stripe’s core function is recurring payments, companies are moving away from conventional payment gateways, such as World Pay and Sage Pay and looking to Stripe to provide the answer. Coupled with its flexibility, low fees and recurring payment methods, Stripe has an open and comprehensive API which developers absolutely love.

So near the end of 2015, having been around for only 5 short years, Stripe was valued at $5 billion by the New York Stock Exchange. This pushed it onto the scene even more. Suddenly, other more established payment gateways sat up and began to pay attention. PayPal acquired Stripe’s closest competitor Braintree (yes it’s called Braintree) for some $800 million but quite what their intended use for this company it is yet to be seen.

A big jump in value

Recently Stripe ran a new funding campaign as they gear up to take the next step forward. Most likely this will be the attack on PayPal’s core customer base, but this is yet to be seen. The big news however, is that following this funding drive they are now valued at $9.6 billion. And you don’t have to be good at maths to know that that’s almost double its 2015 valuation. For a company to increase its value but $4.6 billion in one year is a major achievement in itself, but there is more. Stripe now integrates with Apple Pay, they’re rolling out new features and modules all the time.

Making themselves more useful, cheaper, more flexible and easier to work with than PayPal is paying dividends. They’ve got bigger expansion plans and as they develop we will keep a close eye and keep our fingers on the pulse.
