SEO Tips

Is your website being found on Google?

Why is that question even important or relevant?

Well, rather than listen to what we have to say about it, ask yourself the following question: When I want to find a product or service I haven’t used before – where do I look?

If the answer isn’t “Google,” then you are either still using the Yellow Pages, you’re a total social media master, or you have found some other way of doing it that the rest of the world hasn’t yet discovered and you need to tell us all now!

If the answer was Google, then here are some little tips to help your site get better rankings without you having to pay an SEO “expert” to do it for you!

Regular Updates

Some of the modern convention will now tell you that this isn’t as important as it once was, but believe us – letting your website go stagnant will not help you. At the end of the day regular updates tells Googles “Spiders” that your site is being maintained by its administrator – which tells it that its active!

Keyword Targeted Pages

Sounds simple, but it does require a little bit of research. Work out what keywords you want people to find your pages under, unfortunately recently Google got rid of their keyword measurement tool, forcing you to use Google Adwords – however a bit of intelligence can be employed to work out what keywords are likely to be used and there are keyword analysers out there but never too sure how trustworthy they are! So then, tailor your content to match with those keywords – if your website is WordPress then you can install a helpful plugin that will tell you how well you’re doing!

Offsite Links

Also known as ‘backlinks’ or ‘backlinking’ is a link on someone else’s website that links to yours! Sounds simple, but of course you have to ask the other people if they will put these links on their sites. Any time you post a link to your site on a social media page this becomes a ‘backlink’ to your website. The more backlinks you can create back to your website the better – Google attributes more importance to a site that has lots of links coming in. Wherever possible, try and get these backlinks to come in from sites that already have a high volume of traffic – this will make that link look more important as it comes from a more important site!

Social Media

Unless you live in a cave you’ll be aware of social media, and possibly even if you do live in a cave! Social media is a part of your marketing mix that you cannot afford to ignore! If you need help, ask for it, there’s loads out there! Join business pages, business communities! There are many industry-specific pages and groups out there you can join and immediately network with others and potential customers!

Meta Tag Your Images

One of the most important things is to tag your images. Most good website editors will allow you to insert a meta description for images you put on the site. Remember Google’s spiders, no matter how well programmed, cannot see what an image really is – they’re not people, they are computers. You have to tell it what an image is. So use the meta description to tell it what the image is. This will help your SEO. Ensure you name and tag the image to match in with the keywords on the page!

Remember!

At the end of the day the following statements are true:

1. No-one outside of Google knows exactly what Google’s spiders are looking for on a website and how their algorithms then decide on websites rankings.

2. What we do know is, Google is wanting to offer those searching it the “most relevant results” whenever they type something in.

So remember that simple rule and work constantly on making your content RELEVANT and therefore more likely to get you noticed! There are simply dozens of things we could tell you all about here but we’ll leave it at 6 for now to avoid frying any brains!
