Go digital or die

Today’s modern business is in transition. The “pre-Google” generation still run the majority of companies and they are generally very set in their ways. Therefore, the thought of switching to digital systems from paper or other traditional formats can be a daunting one, not to mention – in some circumstances, depending on the size of the company or the volume of data/processes that need to be converted to digital, it can be a very expensive one!

But nevertheless, moving to digital is necessary. Outdated systems eventually kill businesses, all businesses.

Why does this happen?

One has only to look at companies who have failed to move with the times, BHS is a recent example. Now, we know that it wasn’t completely down to failure to go digital, but it certainly was a major factor. Companies have to do it or they’ll see their competitors, the younger, more adaptive, more fluid companies start to outstrip them and eventually overtake them.

The Google generation are more open to change, more open to drastic shifts in culture or business practice, as such they’ll be the ones who adapt quicker to market changes and customer behaviour. Customer behaviour is now more digital. People expect to be able to access their account with you via an online system, your website or an app they can keep on their phone. They expect to be able to order online if it is something quick and simple they want. If you force people to call you to get what they want you’ll lose potential customers. Some people might like it, they might like the human face, the human interaction, if that is important for your sales, fair enough – keep that.

But your other systems can save you hours of admin time if they’re automated.

So what do we mean by “Go Digital”?

By going digital we mean the reduction of reliance on paper or “on PC” systems. So even if you’ve made the move away from paper and now everything is on Excel spreadsheets, you still haven’t gone digital – you’ve gone paperless.

By going digital we mean streamlining the administrative processes of your business into a system that automates them as much as can be and stores your data (or at least backs it up) to an offsite location, meaning that you’re insulated against disaster. If something should happen to your office – fire, flooding or worse, then you don’t lose everything. In fact, the best digital systems are cloud based, so you’d be able to set up with laptops at home and keep working.

Working from home is becoming more and more common these days and moving to cloud based systems enables your staff or yourself to do that more effectively. You’ll have access to all your files, shared information, customer contacts and more. Digital systems can be set to trigger reminder emails, text messages, notifications or scheduled actions to fit in exactly with your business and your business requirements.
