ONLINEMARKETING

What is a Content Strategy?

Well to answer the question in the first sentence, what we are doing right here is part of a content strategy!

Blogging, or creating interesting and/or engaging content all goes towards a content strategy – the reason you’ve heard the phrase before is because these days it is perhaps the most important element of SEO or online marketing. In this blog we are going to attempt to shed some light on why it is something your company should definitely be taking heed of.

Why is content so important?

Nowadays Google concentrates on your content above just about anything else. Google regularly updates it’s algorithms as it tries to keep it’s search engine ahead of the curve. Not so long ago information like your metadata and other code-based stuff was highly important for SEO.

But recently Google altered their algorithms to refocus their ranking engine on content above all else.

Why focus on content?

Google never give away everything that their algorithms look for, they keep those cards pretty close to their chest. But they do release some information about the focus of their algorithm and there is often a lot of conjecture in the tech world each time they do release an update as to why exactly they have.

Put simply they have come to the conclusion that one of the only things in your website that you cannot fake is the amount of relevant content you have on it, the amount of work that is done, the regularity of your updates and how much that content relates to other content on your site.

So what sort of content do you need?

Here is usually when the wheel of marketing optimism comes grinding to an ignominious halt. What on earth are we going to write? The good news is, you don’t have to be a writer to create good content. You don’t have to be a writer to create engaging content that people will read. All you need to be able to do is talk about your area of expertise and other areas that relate to it.

What you need to write about is something that relates to your subject that your customers or potential customers might want to know. So think about a question you are often asked by your customers and write something on your site about it. Answer your business’ FAQs in blogs on your site. It is all relevant to what you do, people will search for it and it might be the difference between someone coming to you and going to a competitor.

Look for news articles or social media trends that have a relevance to what you do that you can jump on the bandwagon of, it might sound a little silly but honestly it really does work!

How do you write the blogs?

Our blogs and pages aren’t written by professional writers. We try to write them in a conversational tone, the way you might talk to someone. The most successful online blogs do just that. Your blog and your social media are the opportunity for you to create a personality for your brand. The human voice of a business that might just resonate with your potential clients.

No one wants to be made to feel stupid and if they read a blog or article on your site crammed full of technical jargon which they don’t understand then best case scenario they’ll simply leave your site perplexed and uninformed, worst case, they’ll be insulted and you’ve lost them forever.

How do you get people to read them?

So you’ve managed to get yourself past the “I’m not a writer” block and you’ve written a few articles of interest on your website…. Now what?

Well this is where you need some form of social media strategy – this is part and parcel of a content strategy, but we can help explain that too. Put simply you use social media to spread your brand awareness. Social media is where everybody is these days, your potential customers are there, their potential customers are there – your existing customers are there too, and they know people in their networks who might be interested in your services too.

So you need somewhere to distribute your content, the more places the better.

Where do you start?

Well as with all of these things it starts with your website – that needs to have a blog or article capability on it and it needs to allow you to update it quickly and easily. Use of some nice imagery and graphics would also be beneficial. People get bored with big chunks of text!
