The Brief

El Guaca Mexican Bar & Grill is a successful chain of Mexican restaurants, at the time they came to us, each of their restaurants had it’s own very basic website. They wanted to combine the three into one site with sub-sections for each restaurant. The site needed to have a Mexican theme to it, for obvious reasons, with simple navigation and nice imagery displayed throughout. The look and feel had to be friendly and fun. The atmosphere of the restaurant is laid-back and sociable and they wanted this reflected in the overall experience of the website.

The restaurant also wanted a simple internal system, a portal through which they could update menus, offers, staff rotas, location, stock and so on. This needed to be accessible only by the restaurant managers and the head office staff. Allowing them to internally manage their inter-branch and office communication simply and easily through one simple system.

The Process

Since a good number of our staff are keen on Mexican food and Carlos especially is an avid fan, we visited one of the restaurants to gain an understanding of the customer experience. We discussed with the owners in detail the aims and purposes of the website, what they were hoping to gain from it, what they wanted customers to do when they visited the site and their other website goals.

Once we had been able to drill down exactly what these were, we were able to discuss what each restaurant’s section of the site needed to contain and the layout of each sub-section and sub-page. We also discussed the exact operation of their internal system, the file types it would need to work with, how they wanted to interact with it and all other relevant details on it’s functionality.

We could then move onto the design of the website and internal system for their review and sign-off before progressing to build.

The Solution

The development of the website was based on WordPress as this would give the client an easy-to-use CMS system, which would allow them to make their own changes to the website as they wished. We custom designed and built the website theme, providing them with a truly custom website. Each restaurant was given a sub-section of the website with it’s own sub-pages. This meant that each restaurant got it’s own menu page, booking page, gallery page and so on.

The site was designed and built with a fun, casual theme, simple to navigate but not too corporate in it’s appearance. The site was put live first, replacing the existing websites of the three restaurants and instantly making the business appear to be more established and more professional. The imagery used took the site to an entirely new level, the entire site looked and felt more like a proper dining experience.

Before the site went live all menus, content, images and contact details were added in for each restaurant and a nice splash page was built to easily navigate the customer to the correct location when looking to book. At the same time the portal system was developed, this allowed for PDF, Excel, Word and image documents to be added into the system and downloaded as required. We also helped them set up a browser plugin which would allow them to work on those files in-browser as opposed to having to download, edit and then replace the file.

More restaurants are planned and the site will continue to adapt and grow as time goes on alongside the growth of the business.
